Performance Bounds of UWB TOA Estimation in Presence of Wi-Fi 6E Wideband Interference

We present performance limits of ultra-wideband (UWB) time-of-arrival (TOA) estimation in a dense multipath and interference environment in terms of the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). The analytical bounds are compared to the statistical evaluation of a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator. The results show that the CRLB is not increased by the additional estimation of unknown interference parameters, such as bandwidth or frequency offset. The CRLB is, however, notably affected by the actual value of these parameters. It is further shown that this dependence is particularly strong in a dense multipath scenario. A numerical example is provided to relate the presented results to a practical Wi-Fi 6E interference scenario.
