HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL MONITORING OF LAGOA DA CONCEIÇÃO

Lagoa da Conceição, located on Santa Catarina Island, has been affected by several extreme weather events. This study aimed to improve the understanding of the processes involved in the interaction of meteorological phenomena with the lagoon. This monitoring was carried out through a combination of local meteorological data collection, remote sensing estimates and numerical modeling. Local data were obtained by installing a meteorological station on the lagoon pier. Remote sensing data were obtained from the IceSat-2 satellite for estimating water level and bathymetry and Landsat for estimating surface temperature. Numerical simulations were performed using the WRF numerical model. The results showed that the surface level of the lagoon can be affected by several factors such as meteorological and astronomical tides. Local temperature and precipitation shows the occurrence of several storms over the region. The lagoon´s level changes not only by precipitation, but several other physical forcing. Observed winds at the lagoon show southwest-northeast components aligned with the local topography. Altimetry data from the IceSat-2 satellite showed that its laser sensor allows the assessment of the water level and bathymetry of the lagoon as it passes through the lake. Water surface temperature estimated by the Landsat satellites showed that the lagoon can be monitored remotely. Results of simulations with the WRF model showed that it can properly simulate the rainfall and hydrometeors present in cloud storms that propagate over the Island of Santa Catarina. This study describes the applied methods of using various measurement techniques that provide important data, allowing an improvement in the understanding of interactions and impacts of storms on lakes.
