Improving Thermo-Magnetic Stability of High Jc Nb3Sn Strand Using HHT Rods: An Analysis of Its Effects
High-performance Nb3Sn strands produced by the Distributed Tin (DT) method often suffer from premature quench due to reduced stability under high current application at low magnetic fields. To address this issue, we integrated High Heat Transfer (HHT) rods composed of Cu and Nb into the DT design of High Jc Nb3Sn strands. This study aimed to enhance the thermo-magnetic stability of these strands by improving heat transfer efficiency and minimizing flux jumps. The performance of the modified strands was evaluated through Quench Voltage (QV) measurements during critical current (Ic) testing at various magnetic fields. Flux jumps were analyzed using hysteresis loss graphs. This paper discusses the design and composition of the HHT rods, the results of strand testing, and the impact of modifications to the heat treatment schedule on the QV of the strands.
