External loading-induced deformations of deteriorated pipelines rehabilitated with internal replacement technologies
• FE model for estimating pipeline deformations due to sources of ground deformation. • Consideration of structural contributions of IRP to deteriorated host pipe. • Design charts for informing the systematic, full-scale, performance testing of IRP. A method is presented for estimating deformations due to external lateral loading for full-scale laboratory performance testing of host-internal replacement pipe (IRP) systems. Soil displacements associated with traffic loading and adjacent excavation are described analytically based on prior research. A beam-on-springs finite element (FE) model is developed to represent buried, jointed cast iron (CI) pipelines that have deteriorated and been retrofitted with IRPs. The FE model explicitly accounts for structural contributions of the IRP to the barrel, joints, and discontinuities of the host pipe. The model is verified with past analytical, FE, and experimental results. Using the verified model, a series of charts and relationships are provided to inform full-scale performance testing of IRP materials for a wide range of diameters, thicknesses, and linear-elastic material properties.
