The Estimation Model of Right-Turning Vehicles’ Delay at Signalized Intersections Considering the Impact of Slow Traffic
The implementation of the new traffic regulation regarding yielding to pedestrian has significantly impacted the interaction between right-turning vehicles (RTVs) and slow traffic (pedestrians, bicycles, and electric bicycles). Consequently, there is an imperative need to develop a novel RTVs’ delay estimation model at signalized intersections. In this study, the scenarios of conflicts between RTVs and slow traffic were categorized based on the phase schemes of signal control. A comprehensive examination of pedestrian-vehicle interactions and the crossing characteristics of slow traffic informed the development of delay models for RTVs under diverse scenarios. These models draw upon probability theory and gap-acceptance theory. Empirical data validated the model with an accuracy rate of up to 75%. A sensitivity analysis reveals that variation in bicycle volume has the most substantial impact on the delay of RTVs under the current parameter settings. This research can give implications for optimizing the allocation of spatio-temporal resource at intersections.
