Arterials Demand Management for Mixed Traffic: Leveraging a Trajectory-Based Control Method

As Automated Vehicle (AV) technologies advance, the transportation system is shifting towards a mixed traffic of conventional and connected automated vehicles, causing severe congestion, especially on urban arterials. Existing signal control strategies struggle to handle heavy traffic demand, especially when the heterogeneous traffic becomes oversaturated. To address these challenges, this paper proposes trajectory-based cooperative control strategies for managing heterogeneous traffic at urban arterials. These strategies aim to optimize traffic flow, alleviate congestion, and enhance overall traffic efficiency by considering the diverse composition of vehicles and the traffic dynamics within the urban arterial network. The proposed strategies overcome the limitations of existing approaches by traffic demand management based on the available traffic supply. The theoretical framework, methodology, and experimental results of the proposed strategies are presented. This research contributes to the development of effective traffic management solutions for the evolving transportation landscape, ultimately improving mobility and urban traffic operations.
