The relationship between social pressure regarding physical appearance, maladaptive eating attitudes, and emotional eating in adolescent girls
The issue addressed in this study pertains to the evolving standards of beauty in contemporary society, which can significantly impact the health of young people. The purpose of the research is to investigate the relationship between social pressure related to physical appearance and the risk of developing problematic eating behavior (maladaptive eating attitudes and rational eating) in teenage girls. The study examines differences between adolescent girls with problematic eating (PEG) and balanced eating (BEG) regarding eating behavior, emotional eating, and sociocultural pressure. Participants (N=206 adolescents, 14-18 years) completed EAT-26, EEQ, and SPPS. Results indicate significant differences (p<.001) between groups, with consistently higher scores in the PEG group. Significant correlations (r=.32-.75) and pronounced differences in sociocultural pressure (PEG: M=40.37; BEG: M=20.58) suggest the need for targeted clinical interventions and tailored prevention programs.
