Numerical study on high-pressure hydrogen induced self-ignition under various tube cross-section geometry and burst disk open mode
Hydrogen is a promising alternative fuel to traditional fossil fuels due to its high energy density and clean combustion. However, handling and storage of high-pressure hydrogen pose significant safety risks, primarily due to its propensity for self-ignition upon sudden release. This study numerically investigates the impact of tube cross-section geometries and burst disk opening modes on high-pressure hydrogen-induced self-ignition. Employing the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model with the Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) for combustion and a detailed 21-step chemical reaction mechanism for hydrogen and air, the study analyzes the shock wave propagation, flow structures, and temperature under various configurations. Results indicate that cross-section geometries and burst disk opening modes significantly influence the self-ignition phenomenon, with instantaneous openings exhibiting higher self-ignition tendencies, and non-circular cross-sections exhibiting more complex shock wave patterns. The findings provide insights for optimizing designs to mitigate ignition risks in hydrogen storage and transportation systems.
