Core Loss Estimation of a 180 A, 150 kHz Planar Inductor for a High-Density DC-DC Converter.

This paper describes the numerical analysis done for estimating the core loss of a $180 \mathrm{~A}, 150 \mathrm{kHz}$ planar common inductor used in a $350 \mathrm{~V}, \mathrm{3 2} \mathrm{~ k W}$ interleaved Buck-Boost Converter with an improved gravimetric power density of $7.9 \mathrm{~kW} / \mathrm{kg}$. The design principle and operation of the planar inductor is briefly described providing the physical characteristics of the constructed medium-power inductor. A 3D COMSOL model of the common inductor is presented bearing in mind the core material and their magnetics and thermal characteristics. A set of numerical results of the thermal behavior of the common inductor are analyzed under the electrical environment of the power converter circuit and these are discussed at the end of the paper proposing a heat removal strategy.
