Research on Standardization of Robotic Wheelchair

The increasing development and use of robotic wheelchairs have revolutionized mobility solutions for individuals with impairments, providing enhanced mobility, independence, and safety. These sophisticated devices are equipped with advanced features such as obstacle avoidance and automatic navigation, which substantially improve users' quality of life and alleviate the physical demands on caregivers. Despite these advancements, the absence of standardized guidelines and testing protocols presents significant challenges in ensuring the safety and reliability of these devices. This study underscores the urgent need for comprehensive standards to address the dynamic nature of robotic electric wheelchairs, promoting consistent quality and interoperability with other assistive technologies. Furthermore, establishing a Degree of Autonomy framework for robotic wheelchairs—akin to the autonomy levels in autonomous vehicles—is essential for effective risk management and safety assurance. The proposed standards aim to enhance device safety, build user confidence, and facilitate broader adoption, while also supporting licensing requirements and policy development.
