Dissolution of Gold with Dimethyl Sulfoxide: A Scientometric and Systematic Review Analysis
Gold mining, particularly in the field of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), is economically significant but poses risks due to traditional extraction methods using hazardous chemicals. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) presents an eco-friendly alternative solvent for gold extraction, which is also FDA-approved. This study navigates the research landscape of gold dissolution utilizing DMSO, employing scientometric and systematic review methodologies to unveil insights into its application as a solvent. Through scientometric analysis of citation patterns, journal trends, and co-authorship networks, the study traces the evolution of research in this domain. Analysis of five (5) articles identifies DMSO's sporadic research activity, collaborative efforts, and recent surge in interest. Additionally, a systematic review was employed to evaluate the methodologies, findings, and limitations of relevant studies to identify gaps and opportunities for further investigation. Systematic review findings highlight DMSO's efficacy when combined with copper halides. Notably, only one study has applied DMSO for gold extraction from ASM ores, and its limited scope calls for broader research. Overall, this study addresses a critical gap in understanding the scope of DMSO's application in gold dissolution, paving the way for safer and more sustainable gold extraction practices in ASM communities.
