Introduction

Abstract A significant portion of the South Asian archive is expressed in nonnarrative literary forms. This special section is dedicated to formulating ways of reading adequate to these forms. Since South Asia's nonnarrative genres present scholars with similar interpretive challenges, we propose to study them together as the object of a common subfield of literary critical inquiry. The word we have chosen to designate this object of analysis is “lyric.”
