Influence of Cognitive and Motor Dual Task Training in Individuals with Hemiplegic Gait

Purpose: To study the influence of cognitive and motor dual task training in individuals with hemiplegic gait Relevance: In stroke, impaired cognitive and motor function are the main factors causing a significant decline in ADL.Gait is also dependent on several cognitive abilities, post stroke cognitive training along with gait training may further improve gait. For this reason, dual-task training is an important therapeutic intervention to promote simultaneous recovery of cognitive and motor function post-stroke.Participants: Total 40 participants were included according to inclusion and exclusion criteria by random sampling technique. Methods: In this experimental study, Group A(n=20): Control group, GroupB (n=20) Experimental group received treatment which received 5days/weeks.Pre and post treatment was assessed with DGI and gait variables: stride length, step length and cadence.Analysis: Data was statistically analysed using student t test.Result: GroupA post intervention DGI was (17.231.7)with p <0.0004 and gait parameters stride length (76.614.0),Cadence (79.284.2) , step length (40.473.0),speed (19.570.04)with p<0.0093 showing extremely significant.GroupB post intervention DGI (20.761.6)was and gait parameters Stride length (80.905.7)cadence (86.045.4)step length (49.805.7),speed (23.90.03) with p<0.0002, showing extremely significant.Between group comparison for DGI for group A shows a mean difference of (17.231.7)whereas in group B shows a significant mean difference of (21.382.1)and gait variables stride length-Group A (76.614.0)and Group B (80.907.5),Cadence-Group A(79.24.2)andGroup B (86.05.4) and step length -Group A (40.473.09)and Group B (49.805.7),Speed -Group A (19.50.04) and Group B (23.90.03).Conclusion: Study conclude that cognitive and motor dual task training in post stroke individuals with hemiplegic gait is more effective.Implications: In gait along with motor, cognitive training is equally important for the gait rehabilitation of stroke patients.Dual task gait training improves the gait it can be recommended as the most efficient training for stroke patients capable for gait.
