The influence of water-repellent coating on the performance of structures made of polymer composite materials in conditions of extremely low temperatures
An analysis was carried out of the influence of a water-repellent coating on the performance of structures made of polymer composite materials in the Arctic and Subarctic zones. The influence of long-term exposure to the low temperatures, moisture absorption, “zero crossing,” exposure to the salt fog on the mechanical properties of samples was studied as well as the complex influence of these factors. The EP-730 water-repellent varnish, applied by spraying, was used as the protective coating. It has been established that in the course of long-term operation of products made of polymer composite materials in the northern regions of Russia it is necessary to pay special attention to possible degradation of their mechanical properties under the impact of various climatic factors. The most significant risk factors include the zero crossings of the ambient temperature and the humid marine environment. The combined action of several climatic factors also produces an additional amplifying effect on the degradation of mechanical properties of the materials and reduces the reliability and lifetime of the equipment. The results obtained highlight the need to use the water-repellent coatings to improve the reliability and durability of the structures made of polymer composite material used in the northern regions.
