Apnea obstructiva del sueño en REM y su relevancia clínica
REM-related obstructive sleep apnea is an entity that occurs in a subgroup of patients with obstructive sleep apnea that has generated interest in recent years. Although it is an entity that has been described throughout several years, only now has research begun to investigate its differences concerning obstructive sleep apnea with a predominance of NREM sleep. Thus, efforts have been made to establish the role of REM sleep and to determine its associations with relevant clinical scenarios in daily practice, such as daytime sleepiness and cardiovascular disease. This article reviews the importance of REM sleep and describes the available evidence regarding REM-related obstructive sleep apnea and its possible association with daytime sleepiness, systemic arterial hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
