REPETITIVE TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION INTERVENTION RAPIDLY RELIEVES SUICIDAL IDEATION IN PATIENTS WITH PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS

Background: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has become an innovative treatment for depression, particularly effective for those resistant to traditional methods. This non-invasive technique stimulates brain nerve cells, targeting mood-related areas.Despite its FDA approval and benefits, the response rate to TMS varies, underscoring the need for personalized treatment approaches. Methods: This study focuses on integrating Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) with TMS in treating refractory depression.NIRS, a functional neuroimaging technology, offers advantages in assessing neural activity compared to other imaging methods. It non-invasively measures cerebral blood flow changes, correlating strongly with fMRI signals. The study also explores the use of accelerated TMS protocols, providing multiple treatment sessions over shorter periods. Results: A case report of a 19-year-old woman with severe depression and suicidal tendencies is presented.Traditional medication and psychotherapy had limited effectiveness. She underwent an accelerated bilateral TMS treatment targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), with sessions guided by NIRS imaging.Posttreatment, significant improvements in depression and anxiety scores were observed, with minimal side effects. Conclusions: The integration of NIRS and TMS offers a promising approach for personalized treatment in refractory depression.Accelerated TMS protocols can provide rapid relief for severe cases. This method has potential implications for enhancing the treatment efficacy of depression, paving the way for more tailored and effective mental health interventions.
