Spontaneous pneumomediastinum from e-cigarette smoking
Despite being commonly considered safer alternatives to cigarette smoking, there is increasing evidence showing that e-cigarette (E-CIG) and vaping are associated with a variety of lung affections, gathered under the acronym of E-cigarette or vaping use associated lung injury (EVALI). One of those is spontaneous pneumomediastinum, a rare condition that typically occurs in young men. We report the case of a young woman without past clinical history who developed a spontaneous pneumomediastinum after electronic cigarette use.
