Mario and the Hole in the Sky

CLIMATE HOPEThis is a beautiful and compelling picture book about the ozone layer and the Mexican-American chemist who won the Nobel Prize for his work in preserving it. However, it’s really a book about climate change, as a wonderful and hopeful section after the main story clearly lays out for older readers both the parallels between the CFC crisis and global warming. Mario and the Hole in the Sky is one of the most successful science picture books I’ve seen in a long time; it’s humanizing, enticing, and hopeful, yet serious in all the right places.

Abstract

CLIMATE HOPEThis is a beautiful and compelling picture book about the ozone layer and the Mexican-American chemist who won the Nobel Prize for his work in preserving it. However, it’s really a book about climate change, as a wonderful and hopeful section after the main story clearly lays out for older readers both the parallels between the CFC crisis and global warming. Mario and the Hole in the Sky is one of the most successful science picture books I’ve seen in a long time; it’s humanizing, enticing, and hopeful, yet serious in all the right places.
