Early Warning System Implementation in Banjo West, Tanauan, Batangas, Philippines
Early Warning systems (EWS) are a crucial component of risk management and disaster preparedness as it helps lessen disaster’s impacts especially for areas specifically identified as vulnerable and at risk. Based on one of its most recent visible and impactful eruptions last 2019, an Early warning system has been implemented in the affected barangays surrounding the volcano. Barangay Banjo West of Tanauan, Batangas, Philippines is an area at risk because of its proximity to the Taal volcano. The research focused on its implementation in Banjo West specifically focusing on the process of implementation and the local implementer’s knowledge of the EWS. Interviews and documentary analysis were conducted involving the barangay’s implementers and residents. The results show that there is a gap between the knowledge of the potential risks, the nature and value of EWS, education regarding the environment, and participation of the community and how it should be implemented in the Barangay. Key areas were identified where there is a need to further enhance the implementation of EWS based on the results.
