Prevalence of Schistosomiasis Among School Pupils in Tanzania
A study was conducted to examine the prevalence and distribution of Schistosoma sps. infections among Tanzanian schoolchildren. A total of 100 students were randomly selected to examine the prevalence of Schistosoma carriers in Dar es Salaam. About 55 of the pupils were positive for Schistosoma sps. egg. The rate of infection differs slightly across sexes, with 53.5% female and 57.5% male. This is to conclude that there is a need for hygiene/health education in rural regions, meant to deter students from contacting surface water sources and to provide portable water supplies.
