Effect of sewing on the mechanical characteristics of composite sandwich materials
Sandwich composite are used in numerous structural applications, with demonstrated weight savings over conventional metals and solid composite materials. The increasing use of sandwich composites in defense structures, particularly those which may be exposed to shock loading, demands for a thorough understanding of their response to suc highly transient loadings. The present work is a comparative study of the mechanical characteristics of the presence of reinforced transverse seams sewn at an angle of 45 ° and without seams on the Behavior of sandwich structures subjected to mechanical stresses. The experimental results show an improvement in performance in terms of the energy required for crack initiation and propagation. In addition, the presence of the seams results in atypical behavior that results in a series of characteristic damage and, on the other hand, the seamless structure exhibits a delamination phenomenon. Finally, a comparison of the analytical results with the experiment is carried out.
