Phytochemical profiling of all parts of Spilanthes paniculata (Toothache plant) for therapeutic implications
The phytoconstituents profiling of the essential oil extracted from the leaves, flowers, stems and roots of Spilanthes paniculata; a synonym of Acmella paniculata (family: Asteraceae) growing along the eastern region of India was studied through gas chromatography along with Mass Spectra (GC-MS). The Gas Chromatography with mass spectra analysis of S. paniculata essential oil from different parts reveals the identification of 73 phytocompounds. These compounds were subdivided into six classes: Monoterpene Hydrocarbon, Oxygenated Monoterpenes, Diterpenoids, Sesquiterpene Hydrocarbons, Oxygenated Sesquiterpenes and Others. The major compounds identified include spathulenol (6.90 – 19.08%), germacrene D (4.62 – 10.77%), (E)-caryophyllene (1.75 – 10.98%) and δ- amorphene (0.44 – 15.32%). This comparative study of the essential oil of the plant was investigated through GC-MS analysis providing insight into the presence of several bioactive compounds with various therapeutic values and can be used in pharmaceutical industries, particularly as an important source of natural anesthesia.
