Developing solar evaporation technologies of the future

Solar(thermal) evaporation is an interdisciplinary research problem with potential broad impact in energy and sustainability spaces. Classically intended for desalination, solar steam-generation applications now also include salt extraction, pollutant purification, cooling, and more. We sought out researchers on the leading edge of technological development to outline the future for solar evaporation technologies. Painting a picture of practicality and complementary uses to established water purification technologies, in this Voices piece, they provide their opinions on the key considerations needed to advance solar steam-generation research.

Abstract

Solar(thermal) evaporation is an interdisciplinary research problem with potential broad impact in energy and sustainability spaces. Classically intended for desalination, solar steam-generation applications now also include salt extraction, pollutant purification, cooling, and more. We sought out researchers on the leading edge of technological development to outline the future for solar evaporation technologies. Painting a picture of practicality and complementary uses to established water purification technologies, in this Voices piece, they provide their opinions on the key considerations needed to advance solar steam-generation research.
