The image of a vampire as an expression of the Shadow archetype in culture
The article is devoted to the study of the transformation of the vampire image from the stand point of Jungian analysis. The purpose of this article is to interpret the vampire image as a manifestation of the Shadow archetype reflecting the dynamics of European culture. The methodological basis of the research is the theoretical provisions of the works of C. G. Jung, describing the structure of the human psyche and the processes of transformation of archetypal images, as well as the ideas of his followers M. L. von Franz, I. Jacobi, A. Gug genbuhl-Craig, D. Henderson, V. Kast, who considered various aspects of the manifestation of the archetype of the Shadow. The analysis showed that the image of a vampire is one of the expressions of the archetype of the Shadow, and from the spectrum of its possible contents it clearly represents everything that opposes the domi nant cultural attitude, belongs to the area of its fears. Historically, the image of a vampire is formed from ideas about the walking dead and blood-sucking monsters, which represent variants of primitive evil. In medieval culture, they have a religious connotation. In the age of Enlightenment, which proclaimed the triumph of Rea son, these ideas are suppressed. And at the same time, a literary vampire appears, who begins to humanize. In parallel, the vampire borrows the symbols of the Devil, whose image is also humanized in Modern times after the degradation into the animal world of the previous period. This process illustrates the rise of the contents of the unconscious and their approach to consciousness and lies in the context of the development of archetypal images of the cultural Shadow of European society. The conclusion is proposed that the image of a vampire is transformed along with culture, reflecting its shadow sides and historical dynamics; he represents a part of the cultural unconscious along with the image of the Devil.
