Enhancing 5G Spectrum Agility Through O-RAN xApp Initiated Handovers
This paper introduces an innovative demonstration of an xApp-based approach for performing handovers in Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN), primarily focusing on improving spectrum sharing, load balancing, and network frequency agility. The proposed solution leverages the near real-time Radio Intelligent Controller (RIC) with an xApp to dynamically alter UE operation frequencies by performing handovers, having the potential to optimize spectrum utilization and mitigate denial of service or jamming attacks. This approach demonstrates the potential for adaptive frequency management, providing a robust defense against threats at both cyber and physical layer, while significantly improving overall network resilience and efficiency. By facilitating dynamic frequency adjustments, the solution enhances the ability to share spectrum resources more effectively, ensuring reliable communication even in environments with high levels of interference and traffic variability.
