A Demonstration of 5G Sidelink-Enabled MANETs Within CORE/EMANE Framework

This paper outlines a demonstration of the emulation of 5G Sidelink communication for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) using the Common Open Research Emulator (CORE) for the network, transport, and application layers and the Extendable Mobile Ad-hoc Network Emulator (EMANE) for the MAC and PHY layers. We have developed a unique 5G Sidelink MAC layer EMANE model, starting from the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer EMANE model and enhancing it to dynamically handle packet completion rate (PCR) curves that we generated using 5G physical layer simulations. This model is more representative of a 5G network and can adjust the PCR curve during runtime based on the previous average Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) between sending and receiving nodes, thereby providing a more accurate emulation of real-world dynamic network conditions. We use this model in three emulation-based demonstrations to compare the performance of the Open Shortest Path First with MANET Designated Router (OSPF-MDR) and the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocols in terms of the amount of overhead incurred by each protocol as a function of the network mobility. The three demonstrations showcasing the model’s performance include: link-level adaptive modulation, multi-hop routing in an urban traffic scenario, and multi-hop routing in low-speed and high-speed random waypoint scenarios.
