Applying Models of Historical Mujahideen Ambushes and Raids to Cyber Deception Practitioner Design

This industry cyber deception practitioners’ position paper applies an expanded Bell-Whaley deception framework to historical models of Afghanistan mujahideen ambushes and raids against the Soviet military. This paper will describe three historical examples each from the 1980s, featuring ambushes and raids against Soviets and Afghan government military, described by former Afghanistan mujahideen commanders. These examples model unorthodox cyber deception build approaches, but suggest there are alternative ways to naturalize mujahideen or guerilla military tactics to cyber deception design. This practitioners’ working paper will demonstrate how we apply this expanded deception framework to our industry custom deception builds, modeling a visualization of a mujahideen raid on a Soviet outpost that demonstrates mimicking and dazzling network packet flow to manipulate an attacker’s collection and decision-making on an attack pathway.
