nvestigationof Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Active Principles fromPsydrax umbellataLeaf Extract

The use of phytochemicals as sustainable alternatives in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical sectors is emphasized by current research trends, which also highlight the phytochemicals' ability to fend off oxidative stress and microbial infections.Psydrax umbellata (Medicinal plant) was gathered from the outskirts of Kanyana, Mangalore, Karnataka, which is part of Kalanjimale Reserved Forest. The yield was 17.04% when fresh leaves were shade-dried, ground into a powder, and then extracted using Soxhlet with water as a solvent. It was discovered that the plant contains sssnumber of secondary metabolites, such as glycerine, performic acid, and -Santalol, which enhance its antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed 29 metabolites; D-Allose, DL-Arabinitol, and squalene are significant compounds that support its pharmacological potential. When the extract's antibacterial activity was assessed, it demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition against Salmonella typhimurium, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus. At higher concentrations (80 g/ml), the extract exhibited significant antimicrobial activity. The total phenolic content (TPC) was measured at 95.57 1.0 mg GAE/g, indicating strong antioxidant potential.Flavonoid in the extract was quantified at 121.19 0.99 mg/g of Rutin equivalent, underscoring its role in managing oxidative stress-related conditions. The extract demonstrated considerable antioxidant activity with an IC of 0.38, which is comparable to ascorbic acid (IC = 0.24).These results imply that P. umbellata leaf extract has potential as a natural source of Bioactives, with prospective uses in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries due to its antioxidant and antibacterial qualities.Further studies are needed to explore its therapeutic applications.
