Traditional use, chemical composition, and pharmacological activity of Anacyclus pyrethrum (L.) DC

Most pharmaceutical active ingredients are derived from natural products and used to treat diseases worldwide. Anacyclus pyrethrum (L.) DC( A.pyrethrum )is the root of the Roman pyrethrum plant of the Asteraceae family, with excellent medicinal value in both traditional and modern medical systems. This study reviews the origin, characteristics, distribution, chemical composition, functional indications, and pharmacological activity of A. pyrethrum . Literature on A. pyrethrum was retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, Springer Link, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Medical Journal Full-text Data, Wanfang Medical Network, and VIP Medical Information Resource System for the review. A. pyrethrum exhibits excellent medicinal value within the traditional medicine system, including antidiabetic, immune stimulation, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, memory enhancement, aphrodisiac, antibacterial, antioxidant, local anesthetic, and insecticidal activities. This review highlights the medicinal value of A. pyrethrum , underscoring the need for the effective development of techniques for large-scale production and protection.
