Introduction: Jim Siegel Reappears
Abstract: This article introduces a special issue of the journal INDONESIA that both honors and reckons with the work of Jim Siegel, an anthropologist and Indonesianist whose highly original scholarship and unique style of mentorship have left a lasting impact on so many of his students, colleagues, and others. The article provides a brief biographical sketch of Siegel and identifies some of the key themes that emerge from the articles, interviews, and personal reflections that make up the issue: the approach to teaching and mentorship that continually pushes at the limits of understanding; the interweaving of philosophy and anthropology; the ethic of openness to otherness; and more.
