The problem of anxiety in contemporary psychology
In recent decades, the interest of psychologists in studying anxiety has significantly increased. This trend is driven by the radical changes occurring in contemporary society, characterized by the unpredictability and uncertainty of the future, leading to restlessness, emotional tension, and anxiety. This paper is dedicated to the study of anxiety-related issues. The basic ideas are outlined in the following sections: the notion of anxiety in contemporary psychology, the development of views on anxiety throughout the history of psychology, forms of anxiety, psychological causes of anxiety, and the problem of anxiety in psychology. The notion of "anxiety" is used with different meanings by various authors. It is also treated as a temporary mental state that arises under the impact of stressful factors; as a frustration of social needs; as a primary index of deprivation when the organism cannot satisfy its needs, and so forth. Anxiety can manifest itself both psychologically and physiologically. The problem of identifying the source of anxiety is crucial for understanding its causes. Anxiety is a complex and pervasive problem in contemporary psychology, attracting significant attention from researchers, clinicians, and the general public. Various aspects of the anxiety issue in contemporary psychology include increased prevalence, diversity of anxiety disorders, comorbidity with other conditions, the biopsychosocial model, technological impact, trauma-informed approaches, cultural and social influences, prevention and early intervention, personalized treatment approaches, telehealth, and accessibility. Addressing the issue of anxiety in contemporary psychology requires a multidisciplinary and holistic approach. Continued research, community awareness, and destigmatization efforts are crucial for promoting a more comprehensive understanding of anxiety and improving mental health outcomes.
