A Multisequence Space Vector PWM Scheme for Peak-Peak Torque Ripple Minimization in Split-Phase Induction Motors

Multiphase machines are well-suited for applications that demand greater power density and enhanced fault tolerance compared to traditional three-phase machines. This makes them increasingly appealing for applications such as electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and industrial automation. Advances in control and modulation strategies are needed to promote the adoption of multiphase machines and cater to the evolving requirements of modern industries. In this article, a multisequence space vector (SV) pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme for peak-peak torque ripple minimization for a split-phase induction motor is proposed. In the proposed multisequence PWM scheme, unlike the conventional SV scheme, the selection of the switching sequence of the voltage vector is based on extensive theoretical analysis using the concept of instantaneous error voltages. In this scheme, the switching sequence that generates the minimum peak-peak torque ripple at any operating point is selected. The major challenge of using the approach of stator flux ripple in minimizing torque ripple is mainly attributed to the complexity of split-phase drive in terms of the availability of a large number of voltage vectors and multiple SV planes. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed scheme are verified theoretically, using simulations carried out in the MATLAB Simulink platform and experimentally using DSP TMS320F28335 and Spartan 6 FPGA.
