Advancing Critical Care:A Narrative ReviewOn TheInfluenceOfClinical Pharmacist-LedInterventionsOnMedication SafetyAndOutcomesInIndianICUs
The field of critical care medicine has expanded in India; however, issues remain untouched when it comes to the safety of medications in Intensive Care Units.Mistakes in drug prescription and other ADEs are often realized and bring in high morbidity, mortality, and health costs. The present systematic review aims to summarize the effects of clinical pharmacist interventions on medication-related issues and patient care in ICUs in India. These consist of the following interventions namely medication reconciliation, drug utilization reviews, dose adjustment, and patient counseling.Further, care collaboration models with clinical pharmacists improve the safety of medication and minimize the occurrence of ADEs.Common themes that the review determined involved better medication safety, improvement in the therapy, and reduced costs related to the drugs. The analyses pointed to a 25-30% reduction in medical errors with medication and essential and nearly half fewer preventable ADEs when clinical pharmacists were involved in MDTs.However, leaving stress is just one of the more apparent plentiful advantages that still exist barriers like scarce resources and insufficient training.Mitigating the mentioned threats can improve the overall quality of care provided in the Indian ICU and underlines the imperatives of the implementation of a systematic model of clinical pharmacists in critical care departments.
