MECHANICAL TESTING OF ALUMINUM METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES REINFORCED WITH 6% AND 8% WEIGHT OF ALUMINA
Aluminium metal matrix composites, or AMMCs, are widely employed in a wide range of engineering applications, such as piston rings, brake drums, cylinder liners, connecting rods, and many more. To make MMCs, the best attributes of each of its constituents-the toughness and ductility of the matrix, and the high modulus and strength of the reinforcement-are combined and customized. For testing, the AMMCs in this study are made from Al6061 alloy reinforced with different weight percentages of Al2O3, such as 6% and 8%, using a stir casting process. Tensile, compressive, wear, and hardness tests are performed on the prepared AMMCs specimen in accordance with ASTM standards. For the 6% and 8% reinforced AMMCs, the corresponding tensile strength is 129 N/mm2 and 140 N/mm2, compressive strength is 384 N/mm2 and 419 N/mm2, coefficient of friction is 0.22 and 0.37, and hardness is 51.72 HV and 52.86 HV.
