Experimental analysis of polarized BRDF of coating material surface

To study the polarization spectral characteristics of coated materials in hemispherical space, we measured the scattering polarization characteristics of two typical coated objects: a high-reflectivity green-coated aluminium plate and a low-reflectivity black-coated wood plate. The measurements were taken using a fully automated polarized bi-directional reflectance distribution function (pBRDF) measurement system in the band of 970 to 1350nm. The test results indicate that the polarized reflectance of the two coated objects is symmetrically distributed in the hemispherical space with the solar principle plane as the axis. The polarized reflectance is most significant in the solar principle plane, which is larger than that in the backward scattering region in the forward scattering region. Additionally, the polarized reflectance of the black-coated wood panel exhibits a peak in the direction of the specular reflectance. Under different relative azimuth angles, the polarization reflectance of the two coated objects differs significantly. Therefore, it is advantageous to use polarization information to detect the coated objects in the plane with relative azimuth angles of 120°~180°. Studying the scattering polarization characteristics of coated objects in hemispherical space can enhance object detection and identification performance.
