Protecting Milk Supply
In Brief Few women in the United States have a minimal intervention birth. One or more interventions such as intravenous fluids, oxytocin for induction or augmentation of labor, and epidural analgesia, affect coming to volume and development of a robust milk supply. Supplementation is often suggested during the birth hospitalization. Our breastfeeding expert, Dr. Spatz, explains risk factors for challenges with establishing milk supply and why supplementation should always be accompanied by pumping.
