Measuring Biofeedback Responses of Muscle Contraction using Online Monitoring Surface EMG on Elderly Women with Sarcopenia

This study aims to measure the increase in the strength of upper limb and lower limb muscle contractions in elderly women who exercised for four and eight weeks. Measurements were carried out using a surface EMG-based MyoMES device. A total of 10 elderly women with sarcopenia (71.90 ± 6.71 years old) who lived in elderly homes were given an elderly exercise program. Differences before and after intervention were tested using a one-way ANOVA. The results of measurements of the biceps, triceps, quadriceps, and gastrocnemius muscles using surface EMG showed a significant difference between before and after the intervention (p<0.05). The results of biceps muscle measurements showed an increase in muscle contraction strength in weeks four (3.10) and eight (15.00). Then, the results of measuring the triceps muscle also showed an increase in muscle contraction strength in week four by 4.00 and in week eight by 12.80. The results of quadriceps muscle measurements also showed an increase in muscle contraction strength in week four by 8.10 and in week eight by 12.00. The results of measurements of the gastrocnemius muscle also showed an increase in muscle contraction strength in week four of 8.70 and week eight of 10.50. The conclusion of this research is that the surface EMG-based MyoMES device is able to measure muscle contraction strength consistently and is able to measure the increase in muscle contraction strength in elderly women after elderly exercise for four and eight weeks.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the increase in the strength of upper limb and lower limb muscle contractions in elderly women who exercised for four and eight weeks. Measurements were carried out using a surface EMG-based MyoMES device.
