Validation of the Sea State Estimation Method Using a Simulated Ship Motions Dataset

Sea state estimation from ship motions is useful to increase the safety of the ship and navigation. In this study, an algorithm based on measured ship motions together with corresponding transfer functions is assessed. The algorithm, providing main wave parameters, is tested with simulated data. The main aim of the research is the validation of a wave spectrum assessment procedure for unimodal short-crested sea state conditions, based on the employment of the Spearman rank correlation coefficient. The performance of the mentioned method is evaluated in terms of mean absolute error (MAE). The obtained results are encouraging and should lead to assessments with real ship motions data acquired directly on board.
