Investigation of Marine Phytoplankton by In-Flow Holographic Tomography
In this paper we show the application of In-Flow Holographic Tomography for the reconstruction of the 3D refractive index of marine phytoplankton. The relevance of this biological class is linked to their primary role in the life pyramid and their action as balance regulators of marine environment, whose health has been seriously threatened by anthropic action during the last decades. Due to the role of phytoplankton as bioindicators of the health status of their ecosystem, their fast and complete monitoring is of high interest, therefore high-throughput and complete investigation techniques are sought after. The advantage of exploiting Digital Holography as imaging technique is linked to its label free and quantitative properties, while with tomography it is possible to visualize their internal structures. Finally, the sample rotation paradigm helps to obtain a fast acquisition system.
