Improvement of OLSRv2 massage format and message interval to reduce routing overhead in a D2D communication network
Optimized Link State Routing Protocol (OLSR) is one of the most famous and widely used proactive routing protocols in Device-to-Device (D2D) communication network. The traditional OLSR and OLSRv2 experience significantly higher routing overhead due to node movements and topology changes. Over the years, many researchers have become interested in improving the traditional version of the OLSR to minimize energy and routing overhead. This paper proposes an algorithm that improves the OLSRv2 by adding some new features that improve the routing overhead in a D2D communication network. The proposed algorithm replaces the OLSR’s HELLO, HELLO, and TC message sequence with a new sequence that interweaves HELLO and TC messages with three database (DB) chores and LISTEN states. The proposed improvements are implemented in NS-3 simulator and validated using mathematical model. The simulation results for routing overhead in static scenario with 10, 30, 50 and 100 number of nodes are implemented. The analysis shows that our proposed routing protocol significantly outperforms OLSR and OLSRv2 in terms of minimizing routing overhead. This superiority is attributed to optimized message exchange strategies, efficient neighbour discovery mechanisms, and dynamic Multi-Point Relay (MPR) selection based on node mobility. These factors reduce the number of control messages and unnecessary message propagation, resulting in lower routing overhead. Similarly, in our simulation with various mobility speeds, our proposed protocol consistently demonstrates lower routing overhead compared to OLSR and OLSRv2.
