Resource Allocation for Immersive Content Delivery in the Cloud-Edge Continuum

Video-related traffic constitutes 80% of today’s Internet traffic. Holographic and immersive video content has been identified as the killer application of 6G networks. Multi-access Edge Computing and tile-based encoding are crucial technologies for enabling immersive video applications. These technologies are expected to overcome the challenges of transferring a large volume of data under stringent timing requirements. In this paper, we propose and evaluate an optimization model to support the distribution of immersive content under the assumption that caching and computing resources are deployed on MECs based on the serverless task execution model. We evaluated the proposed model subject to the popularity of each tile’s representation and the expected field of view (FoV). The results show that the proposed model delivers high-quality content representation without demanding intensive computation to identify FOV in the early stages of content publication.
