An Indoor Low-Power Hydroponics System for Urban Spaces
Innovating an IoT hydroponics farming system in a cabinet setup offers a more manageable and accessible system, which addresses manpower, space, and agricultural issues. Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) improves system communication, resiliency, and efficiency, reducing the complexity and high power consumption. The project implemented a hydroponics system in a cabinet setup using a Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) with Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) to address high power consumption issues and ensure reliability and scalability of sensor nodes in conducting remote system monitoring and maintenance. The system used a Raspberry Pi mi-crocontroller, Texas Instruments LPSTK-CC1352R1 and CC1352R, sensors, and actuators to monitor and maintain the health and growth of lettuce and developed through the Contiki-NG platform. TSCH is shown to outperform CSMA in terms of energy consumption and radio duty cycle (RDC). Furthermore, it is also advantageous for large-scaling in terms of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) compared to CSMA with more packet losses as the number of nodes increases. Wireless sensor network of 7 sensor nodes deployed using TSCH MAC setting vastly reduced the power consumption by 73.89%.
