The Use of Mass Media in Migrant Integration: Analysis of Migration Management Directorate
Migrant integration practices include many elements such as education, labor markets, anti-discrimination, culture, etc. and the tools and methods used affect the success of integration activities. Especially the impact of mass media on society has been proven by many studies throughout communication research. This effect emphasizes the importance of the role of mass media in immigrant integration in terms of understanding multiculturalism in society. This study aims to reveal the use of mass media in migrant integration through the YouTube channel of the Directorate of Migration Management, the institution authorized to implement policies and strategies in the field of migration and integration in Turkey. The study was conducted using content analysis method. The channel's videos on migrant integration were compared with other content, the content, titles and explanations were evaluated in terms of integration, and the broadcasting policy of the channel since its establishment was evaluated. Content analysis revealed that the Ministry of Migration Management does not actively carry out migrant integration activities on its YouTube channel. It was observed that the channel does not have a regular video upload policy and that integration-related content among the uploaded videos has decreased over time. The findings can be used as an important source of reference for developing more effective communication strategies in migrant integration. However, as a result of the study, it was determined that the YouTube channel of the Directorate of Migration Management (and accordingly the way it uses mass media) is insufficient in terms of migrant integration.
