Total hip arthroplasty with the minimally invasive anterior approach using a specifically designed operating table
BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty with the minimally invasive anterior approach is recommended due to its intermuscular nature. This study described a minimally invasive (MI) anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty using a specialized fracture table.METHODS: A prospective study was carried out at Hue Central Hospital on 69 patients (76 hips) who underwent total hip arthroplasty using the anterior MI approach.RESULTS: The average age was 51.67±11.35 years (range, 23-74 years). The mean blood loss was 406.1±155.5 cc (range, 65-630 cc). The mean incision length was 8.1±0.7 cm (range, 7-10 cm). The mean operative time was 115.0±0.2 minutes (range, 80-185 minutes). The postoperative radiography outcomes showed an average abduction cup of 44.9±7.5° (range, 30-65°), and the cup anteversion was 14.8±5.2° (range, 4-28°). The mean Harris hip score was 90.8±3.6 (range, 83-96). No complications associated with the use of the orthopedic surgical table were found.CONCLUSIONS: The MI anterior approach performed using the specialized orthopedic table by experienced surgeons is an MI technique, applicable to all primary hip patients. This technique is safe and advantageous for patients.
