A Study of the Operating Modes of Controlled Shunt Reactors in Electrical Networks of 330 kV and Higher Rated Voltages
In modern power systems, into which large-scale renewable energy sources are integrated, there is a need for more advanced approaches to the problem of controlling reactive power flow distribution and voltage stabilization. Thus, when short-term and abrupt changes occur in the operation mode, a need arises to improve the procedure for selecting the parameters of controlled shunt reactors applied for efficiently compensating reactive power flows and stabilizing the voltage in the power grid high-voltage electric networks. The existing procedure is based on using the RMS values of operating parameters and performs inefficiently in selecting the shunt reactors under the above-mentioned conditions. The article is devoted to improvement of the method for selecting shunt reactors with respect to instantaneous power in order to eliminate the reactive power surplus produced by the transmission line charging capacities in electric networks with rated voltage of 330 kV and higher. Based on the proposed procedure, the algorithm for operation of controlled shunt reactors located at priority 330 kV nodes of the Azerbaijan power system is described, and their operational modes are studied. The study results have shown that in accordance with changes in the electric network operation modes, shunt reactors operating in the real time mode stabilize and maintain the voltage on the 330 kV buses of the system within the permissible limits, thereby enhancing the power system voltage stability.
