Verification of the Wind Resource Data Contained in the NASA SSE Database for a Flat Terrain in the Territory of Russia’s United Power System of South

At the initial wind farm design stages, wind measurement data at a supposed wind farm placement site are often unavailable. Wind resources are typically evaluated using various information sources, including the NASA SSE database. The article presents the results of validating the NASA SSE wind resource data for the flat terrain of Russia’s United Power System (UPS) of South territory. The validation was carried out by comparing the NASA SSE data with the meteorological data measured at 14 ground weather stations situated at airports in the UPS of South territory and sourced from the Reliable Prognosis database. The analysis considers various factors, such as geographical location, elevation, and openness of weather station sites in terms of their influence on the accuracy of NASA SSE data. The calculation results have shown that the NASA SSE  data are valid for the majority of the UPS of South territory. The article also presents a wind gradient model developed based on the NASA SSE data for simulating wind speeds over the height for wind farm sites located on the UPS of South territory.
