Performance Evaluation and Application Exploration of NB-IoT-Based IoT-NTN
Satellite communication is one of the important directions of future communication development, and the industry is very optimistic about the application prospect of satellite communication in the Internet of Things (IoT), so the IoT-Non Terrestrial Network (IoT-NTN) based on technologies such as NB-IoT has emerged. IoT-NTN has the advantages of wide coverage of satellite communication, strong disaster resistance, and not easy to be physically attacked by the ground. However, the industry lacks comprehensive performance evaluation of real commercial chips. Due to the special characteristics of satellite networks and resources, it is difficult for applications to obtain the performance of real commercial chips, so applications lack a reliable basis when considering IoT-NTN. Therefore, in this paper, we use instruments to simulate the real GEO satellite environment to test the commercial IoT-NTN chips based on NB-IoT, explore the performance of the current industry IoT-NTN products in the network in terms of throughput, latency, and power consumption, explore the direction of the application, and make commercial recommendations.
