Continue without Disabling: Fifty Years of Disability Arts in Canadian Theatre Review
This article surveys fifty years of writing about disability arts within the Canadian Theatre Review, including the theoretical traditions that inform the journal’s development, and the communities it has called on and, in turn, directly impacted since its inception. From manifestos to scripts, alongside meditations, festival reviews, production histories, interviews, and close analysis of theatrical case studies, the journal’s contributions to disability scholarship have taken a number of forward-thinking forms over the years. Researchers working both within and alongside this field have proposed a number of discursive, political, and aesthetic strategies for greater inclusion, building on insights from other disciplines and thereby forming new intersections of criticism and activism. This article attends to some of these intersections, situating articles within specific lineages of thought and developing a provisional overview of their key concerns.
