26 Safer together- establishing a national initiative for workforce safety in a multistate health system

Description
The ”Safer Together: National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety (NAP)” advocates for a comprehensive, systems-focused strategy to eliminate patient and workforce harm. One of the four foundational areas in the National Action Plan (NAP) emphasizes workforce safety, underscoring that the healthcare workforce is a necessary precondition to advancing patient safety. This focus highlights the need for a unified, total system approach to eliminate harm to patients and the workforce. Organizing a multidisciplinary team, establishing baselines and SMART goals, and engaging key stakeholders in reviewing workforce safety events are crucial strategies to reduce workforce harm within a large multi-state health system. This approach is further enhanced by regularly sharing insights and guidance, leveraging our learning system, and ensuring an informed effort to enhance workforce safety. The top five types of workforce harm in our system are needle sticks, workplace violence, slips, trips and falls, safe patient mobilization, and exposure to bodily fluids (figure 1). In our interactive session, we discuss our comprehensive framework, outcomes (figure 2), and lessons learned in our journey to improve workforce safety.
