37 Engaging physicians in quality improvement using a cost savings reinvestment program

Description
It is imperative for modern provider organizations to increase physician alignment and empower them to make the best clinical decisions while stewarding scarce resources. At Stanford Health Care (SHC) and Stanford School of Medicine (SoM), we increase innovative and efficient care by engaging front-line providers in quality improvement and cost savings in direct costs via the Cost Savings Reinvestment Program or “CSRP”. A portion of realized cost savings from physician-driven improvements is shared with the School of Medicine. As a result, CSRP has engaged over ten SoM departments, inclusive of five clinical divisions and two destination service lines. Over 6 years, there are over sixty-five endorsed proposals and validated cost savings of over $34 million. This savings can be attributed to the following categories including clinical improvement interventions (CI), pharmaceutical utilization management, repatriation of services, level of care and length of stay optimization, and physician preference items (PPIs). CSRP is an innovative program that captures physician novel ideas that are not identified centrally by the organization.
